About the NGO
Child In Need Institute
Founded 44 years ago to save children from malnutrition, CINI now act as a facilitator rather than a mere implementer - with children, adolescents, and women as their central focus.
This means all their programmes are aimed at mothers and children, from birth to adulthood.
As an example of CINI’s influence and intervention, take the case of teenager Runa Mondal, who had been absent from her school in Diamond Harbour, near Kolkata, for two months. This irked the head teacher, especially as she recalled attending an awareness session by CINI about child marriage and how economically disadvantaged girls often become victims of it.
She sent a teacher to Runa’s home and learnt that indeed, her wedding had been fixed. Along with a CINI representative and the local head of police, the head teacher visited the family and convinced the parents of the ill-effects of child marriage and its legal implications. The wedding was cancelled and today, 15-year-old Runa attends school regularly.
In the past year, through community based intervention, CINI have directly reached more than 36,000 adolescent girls, facilitated the formation of 950 adolescent groups and enrolled about 3,300 children in government schools in the eastern region where it operates, primarily West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Seeking to break the vicious cycle of poverty, malnutrition, ill-health, illiteracy, abuse and violence, CINI’s work starts right from conception till the child hits the age of 18.
They not only facilitate the care of the first 1,000 days of a child’s life with antenatal checkups, postnatal care and routine immunisation, CINI also ensure their proper physical and mental development, and later cast a safety net for the child to receive full education and protection from maltreatment. Last year CINI managed to reach about 5,000 pregnant woman and more than 15,000 infants.
CINI believe that the family provides the best safety net for any child, so going forward, they will focus their activities on the well-being of this core group and invest in the sustainable development of mother and child. Last year, they impacted almost seven million lives - but they can't do it without support from donors like you.
