About the NGO
Jan Seva Trust
Founded in 1989 by Rajashree Birla, it is managed by Grasim Industries, an Aditya Birla Company. The NGO was started with an aim to uplift the marginalised communities in and around the company’s plants.
They operate social projects in 29 villages and out of these they have selected five to make into model villages. JST focus on creating a conducive environment for quality education by building better infrastructure for schools, promoting extracurricular activities and ensuring zero dropouts by providing counselling and creating awareness at the village level.
JST organise a number of health camps, including those for general health, eye checkups, immunisation and family planning to ensure these rural communities can get regular check-ups and treatments. They have also opened a 65-bed multi-speciality hospital in Veraval.
As agriculture is the main source of livelihood for most in the communities, JST focus on educating and empowering farmers about best practices, suitable crops, right irrigation methods and so on, and encouraged to attend trainings and awareness workshops. JST also help community members learn skills such as tailoring, embroidery and run computer literacy programs.
All their social projects aim at improving the quality of life in rural communities and promoting development.
